December 31st, 2007Ohio offers business and industry many unique qualities that contribute to better balance and, ultimately, optimal business performance. But it doesn't stop there. Those who live in Ohio not only have the opportunity to pursue their professional ambitions, but the ability to achieve their personal dreams.I am inspired by Rob Howlett's passion for the state of Ohio and the balance he has found for his family and company. Rob is founder and CEO of Circlesprout Ltd in Cleveland, Ohio. Rob left Cleveland seeking professional and personal success only to find that it was most easily attainable in Ohio, the state of perfect balance; the state he proudly calls home.
Q: Have you moved back to Ohio to find work:life balance? Please share your story.

Absolutely. My wife and I came to Ohio in 1990 from New York City. We had each earned Columbia MBA degrees and worked in big, impressive companies -- but we wanted to raise kids in a more balanced place. We came to Ohio for balance and found it.
The day I left NYC, my boss -- a self-made millionaire tycoon -- said, somewhat wistfully, "Later today, you are flying to your new home in Ohio. The moment you arrive you will be richer than I will ever be in New York. You'll be richer because you will have a house, a lawn, and a good school right down the block for your kids -- things I believe I will never achieve here. You will have all that the moment you land there this afternoon. I envy that."
Part of balance is having opportunity in every part of the circles of our lives. Ohio offers opportunities because it's a participation state. You can be a spectator when you want, but whenever you want to be an active participant, the opportunity to get involved is here. Want to be a trustee of a cultural organization? Want to learn a new sport? Want to become more engaged in a rounded life? Ohio invites participation.
On a lighthearted note, Central Ohio is a particularly nice place to raise kids because it's so flat. You can always see them and call them home for dinner.
