In Ohio, Kimble Manufacturing has been able to grow beyond its original business model. But for Jim Cahill, Ohio is all about quality family moments without sacrificing business ambitions.

“In Ohio, I’ve been able to grow my company beyond its original business model and have time to enjoy my family. I sleep easy knowing my staff enjoys their lives here as much as I do,” said Cahill, president of Kimble Manufacturing.

Kimble Manufacturing makes high-technology concrete mixers for construction and oversized custom chassis for a wide variety of industries. Cooperation among government and other businesses adds up to efficient operations for Kimble. And the state provided the company with low-interest loans and investment grants. With a local business roundtable and government grants for landscaping improvements, Kimble has reaped the benefits of its micropolitan location.

Watch this video as Cahill discusses the critical importance of Ohio's workforce in helping his company succeed.

The location needs of entrepreneurs are different from those of established businesses that already have access to many resources that new companies must find.

Entrepreneurs see Ohio’s Enterprise Appalachia as the ideal location choice for start-up opportunities due to its ability to deliver on the ideal location criteria for an entrepreneur-friendly environment: ready access to venture capital, knowledge and labor, supply chains and markets.

Ideal Selection Criteria

Access to capital. Ohio's Enterprise Region makes it easy for you to access capital by a variety of methods to successfully commercialize your product or service. Entrepreneurs locating in Ohio Appalachia benefit from regional venture capital and financial support that meets the needs of all businesses from start-ups to gazelle high growth companies.

Access to knowledge. Ohio's Enterprise Region makes it easy for you to leverage academic centers, skilled labor and entrepreneurial support services to make your strategic plan and operation a success.

Access to supply chain. A highly developed transportation infrastructure and close proximity to materials and suppliers make it easy and less expensive to access needed resources.

Access to market. Appalachia Ohio is centrally located in close proximity to the largest North American markets. A strong infrastructure featuring multiple transportation options on water, land or air simplifies reaching a global market.

If Appalachia Ohio is not the first place you think of as a site for your new enterprise, we're not surprised. But when you approach the site selection process with an open mind, it opens up a unique set of successful business opportunities you won't find elsewhere. Check the data, and you'll see Appalachia Ohio matches the experts' criteria for the ideal location very well.

Also, check out what Inc. magazine has to say about the region.

The location needs of entrepreneurs are different from those of established businesses. Most startups and early-stage businesses don’t have the same level of available financing. They don’t have internal laboratories and R&D departments or supply chains. While an established business has the ability to draw from its existing networks to find what it needs, an entrepreneur must find the perfect balance of resources and low costs. All of those needs make selecting the right site—one offering the resources to answer a wide array of entrepreneurs’ challenges—critical. For the entrepreneur, getting it right the first time is imperative.

According to small business experts, there are four criteria that make up an ideal location for business development: access to knowledge and labor, access to business capital and support services, access to supply chain and markets and access to a balanced life.

Ohio's Enterprise Appalachia Region offers an ideal start-up environment, providing all the criteria to develop a successful small business. The region offers access to these resources and much more. Click here to learn more about Ohio’s Enterprise Appalachia Region.

Per capita statistics are often provided to sell a location’s labor market, showing the population percentage with advanced degrees. However, when a company is looking to hire new employees, it isn't the percentage that matters. Instead, it is the number of available people with the right knowledge and skills that really counts. Ohio's higher education institutions graduate more potential employees than many states combined, in addition to the state's pool of skilled workers across nine key industries.

Jim Cahill, president at Kimble Manufacturing, discusses the critical importance of the Ohio workforce in helping his company succeed.
